Mondays with Nonnie: Remembering Loved Ones

People will not look forward to posterity, who never look backward to their ancestors.
Edmund Burke

Our children don't have the privilege of knowing their Grandpa (my dad) and Great Grandparents of our family which I consider a great loss on their parts so when my sister shared an idea that they incorporate into their Monday Family Home Evening I was thrilled to make it a part of ours as well!  On the birthday week of the family member who has passed away we dedicate that Monday Evening to listening to stories about their lives, look at pictures, and discuss traits we would like to carry on from them.  This past month was my Grandma McKeon's birthday and my dad's birthday happens to fall on today (our children thought that was pretty cool and doesn't often happen since we started this tradition).  After we end the evening with a song and prayer we enjoy a treat that our ancestor loved.  My grandma loved Ding Dongs and would leave them in the freezer for extra effect so we had Ding Dongs for the first time,  Not long after we were at the store and my 7 year old snuck a box of Ding Dongs into our basket and I noticed them at the check out line and asked him about them....he said he was just thinking about his great grandma and wanted to get them in order to remember her better.  She would have let him still get them I however did not;).

With Love,
Nonnie

This is a really terrific post. I always enjoy Mondays with Nonnie. Thank you!
p.s. I'm positive that Nonnie won't remember me, but I remember being at Girl's Camp with her one year. I was a little first year, and she was an amazing youth leader who totally inspired me by her positive attitude. Thank you for inspiring me again, over twenty years later!
