Tips on Traveling: #2

Here are two of my newest friends, Mama and Baby Moose, walking through my parents yard while stopping for breakfast.

My second traveling tip I want to share is, "shop the stores you know." Before you head to local attractions on your vacation, stop at stores such as Giant, Wendy's, or Costco to see if they have discount coupons. Yesterday we took the kids to an indoor water park here in Alaska. We stopped at Costco on our way there and picked up a $50 gift card for $35 for that attraction. Just like that we saved $15!

Why not see if sites like groupon.com or restaurant.com have deals on a place you want to go. All you have to do is type in the zip code or the city where you will be staying and deals will start appearing.

While in Hawaii a few years ago, my husband and I were visiting the Dole Pineapple Factory. This is a well known tourist stop. After enjoying some free pineapple, we checked out the gift shop. There, they had a wide arrangement of souvenirs, most importantly, chocolate covered macadamia nuts. We were just about to purchase a few boxes (at $10 each) for friends when a local person told us these exact nuts could be found at Walmart for a fraction of the cost. Thank goodness we heeded his advice and headed to Walmart. We indeed found the treasured candies he told us about for $2. We used that Walmart on numerous occasions to buy snorkeling equipment (instead of renting at the same cost), suntan lotion and other necessities that were totally marked up at the hotel.

So while on vacation, shop the stores you know!

Great tip, Heather! When we go to Orlando we always buy our Disney Park tickets at a Walmart there. We ended up getting free days to the parks and t-shirts at a fraction of the cost we'd pay at the park.
